TYPES OF SEED
Ragan and Massey offers a variety of seed mixes:
Perennial Ryegrass
Developed for high visibility, turf and lawn applications, TriPro® turf type perennial ryegrass has a fine leaf and is dark green in color.
In Northern States perennial ryegrass can be Spring planted for permanent lawns or fairways. On new lawns, clear the seedbed of existing vegetation and cultivate to a depth of 4 inches. The seedbed needs to be firm at planting to prevent rainfall from forcing the seed to deep into the soil. After cultivating use a roller or drag to make the seedbed firm.
Plant 5-7 pounds per 1000 square feet. When planting make sure the seed remain in the top ¼ inch of the seedbed and are not planted too deep. Although our perennial ryegrass is relatively drought tolerant we recommend frequent watering during establishment. Turf-type fescue establishes quickly if irrigated with one inch of water every 2-3 days during the first 3 weeks after planting. Starter fertilizers or 13-13-13 should be applied at planting. A general fertilizer recommendation is 8-10 lbs of 13-13-13 per 1000 square feet. Spring planted lawns should receive an additional application of high nitrogen fertilizer at recommended rates of the fertilizer manufacturer 30 to 45 days after planting. Do not mow until plants reach 4 inches high and then mow the lawn to a height of 3 inches. Maintain the lawn at a 3-inch height.
In warm climates perennial ryegrass is often used for over seeding of permanent grasses on fine lawns, athletic fields, and golf course fairways. Over seeding of existing lawns and fairways should be done in the fall. Perennial ryegrass establishes best when soil temperatures are 65 degrees or warmer. Once established TriPro® perennial ryegrass will thrive in the warm winters of the Southern States. When over seeding existing lawns apply 3-5 pounds of TriPro® perennial ryegrass per 1000 square feet. Heavier seeding rates may be required if mowing heights are below one inch. Expect TriPro® perennial ryegrass to die off in April or May. To hasten spring transition to permanent grasses withhold water after the first of April.
